The Q4 Catch-Up Window: Get Your Books Caught Up Before the Year Closes

Q4 is here, and if you start now, you still have time to get caught up before the year closes. Wait until February, and you'll be scrambling to catch up at the same moment your tax pro needs your numbers.

Catching up in Q4 means you start January with organized, tax-ready books instead of a shoebox and a sinking feeling.

A simple three-month plan

October: Find out where things stand.

  • List every bank account, credit card and loan the business uses.

  • Note the last month each account was reconciled.

  • Gather any missing statements.

November: Do the heavy lifting.

  • Categorize uncategorized transactions, starting with the oldest month.

  • Reconcile one account at a time.

  • Separate any personal charges that ended up on business accounts.

December: Tie it off.

  • Review your Profit & Loss for anything that looks off, like a month with no rent or a $40,000 office supply bill.

  • Make sure loan and credit card balances match their statements.

  • Save a clean set of year-end reports for your tax pro.

A quick reality check: If you're more than six months behind, or you don't trust the numbers you do have, handing off your bookkeeping is the faster route. You don't need a perfect plan before you reach out. That's where RBG provides relief: we build the plan and get your books caught up.
